| Avus 1934 – A vast crowd of 200,000 had gathered around the long AVUS circuit in anticipation of the first outing of the Silver Arrows - the contest between Mercedes and Auto Union. Much to the crowds disappointment however Mercedes withdrew their cars with fuel pump troubles after practice and it was left to the long tails of Auto Union to battle it out with the race seasoned Alfa Romeos. At the end of the first lap Hans Stuck (Auto Union) was 60 seconds ahead of the next man, Louis Chiron (Alfa Romeo) and his speed for the standing lap was 206.9km/h (128.5 mph), the 1933 winners race speed. He was still securely in the lead when he stopped for fuel and tyres after 10 of the 15 laps, only to be forced out with clutch trouble. Momberger (Auto Union) could only finish third, the Auto Unions beaten on their first outing by the Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeos of Guy Moll (see GP001) and Achille Varzi. GP002 depicts the long tail Auto Union Type A of August Momberger complete with long tail bodywork and front suspension farings- this the first competitive outing of what was to become the legendary race cars of Auto Union.
