Avusrennen 1934 - A giant number of spectators turned
up to see the debut of the new German cars from
Mercedes and Auto Union take on the likes of the
Ferrari Alfa's and Maserati's. However Mercedes-Benz
decided to withdraw their cars after practice because of
fuel pump problems and the best the Germans could do
was 3rd with Momberger (GP002) in a long Tail type 'A'
Auto Union with Guy Moll taking the honours in this his
Streamlined Alfa race No.64.
Guy Moll had immense talent and burst onto the scene
when he won the first Grand Prix of 1934, Monaco. He
came second in the second race, the Tripoli Grand Prix,
and in the third race, at Avus, he won again. He started
four more races, and was battling for third place at the
Coppa Acerbo in Pescara when his car suddenly
swerved off the course (reportedly struck by a cross
wind) at 170 mph and ran into a ditch, the Alfa
overturned and continued in a series of spins. The
24-year-old Ferrari star died shortly after the crash.
GP001 represents Guy moll's AVUS winning Alfa with
streamlined body work and front / rear wheel farings.
